Formal Succession to High Priesthood

The ceremony to mark the formal succession to the high priesthood by
Nichiren Shoshu's 67th High Priest Nikken Abe was held on April 6 at
the head temple Taiseki-ji in Fujinomiya City, Shizuoka Prefecture. It
is regarded as the most important ritual of the temple.

High Priest Nikken Abe succeeded the 66th High Priest Nittatsu Hosoi,
who passed away on July 22 last year. The new high priest was installed
on August 8 last year, but the formal ceremony was deferred until this
spring.

High-ranking priests, (representatives of Soka Gakkai, including
Honorary President Daisaku Ikeda and President Hiroshi Hojo, and other
lay believers attended the rites held at the temple's Miei-do, a
ceremonial hall housing a life-size statue of Nichiren Daishonin.

The high priest led the participants in the recitation of the two most
essential chapters of the Lotus Sutra, in the midst of which the high
priest stood up and the recitation stopped.

He proceeded toward the Gohonzon, object of worship of Nichiren Shoshu,
and read a statement he had prepared for the special occasion. He
reported on the prosperous state of the religion to the "three
treasures" of Nichiren Shoshu--Nichiren Daishonin, the Gohonzon and
Nikko Shonin, Nichiren Daishonin's immediate successor, and the other
successive high priests. He also expressed his resolution to faithfully
continue the teachings and traditions as the successor to the orthodox
lineage.

After General Administrator Rev. Eido Fujimoto and representatives of
the priesthood and laity gave congratulatory speeches, High Priest
Nikken Abe addressed the gathering and spoke on the attitude to be
taken by both priests and lay believers. He made these three points:

1. Believers in Nichiren Shoshu should live up to the spirit of
Nichiren Daishonin, the priests by dedicating themselves night and day
to the practice, study and preaching of true Buddhism, and lay
believers by devoting themselves to the practice for the happiness of
oneself and for others, while respecting the "three treasures."

2. All followers of Nichiren Shoshu, priests and lay believers alike,
should exert their utmost to promote Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism to
bring about peace and happiness in the world.

3. Nichiren Shoshu believers should unite in the spirit of "many in
body, one in mind." After the ceremony, a congratulatory party was held
at the Grand Lecture Hall, with Fujinomiya Mayor Yoshitada Uematsu and
other guests attending.

In the evening, High Priest Nikken Abe "turned the Wheel of the Law"
for the first time by lecturing on a passage from Nichiren Daishonin's
writing. The phrase "turning the wheel" derives from an ancient Indian
concept and denotes the way in which the enlightened being preaches the
highest truths of the universe and mankind.

On the following day, the time-honoured annual "Omushibarai" ritual,
ceremonial airing of the temple treasures, consisting of the original
scriptures and writings of Nichiren Daishonin and successive high
priests, and other valuable objects and manuscripts, was observed at
the Grand Reception Hall, in the presence of the high priest. The
treasures are kept at the temple's Gohozo (Treasure House).

Special pilgrimages to the temple to celebrate the formal succession of
the high priest continued until April 17.

--------------------

I suppose that the Soka Gakkai leaders were ecstatic about the succession.

SunDevil============

If Nikken Abe were the official High Priest, there would have to be a uniformity and harmony of his words and actions with those of his predecessor, High Priest Nittatsu Shonin. For, Nichiren Shoshu emphasizes the fusion of the minds of master and disciples. In spite of this, the words and actions of Nikken Abe are vastly different from guidance of High Priest Nittatsu Shonin.

When Nittatsu Shonin Geika accepted Pres, Ikeda's resignation it was because he felt responsible for the slanders Ikeda committed. At that time, Pres. Ikeda promised him he would desist from leading the Gakkai, and had he truly and completely relinquished his leadership, High Priest Nittatsu would have forgiven him. But Ikeda didn't; and concurrently Nikken Abe began promulgating to the general public, "Ikeda is necessary for Kosen-rufu." For this basic reason so many Gakkai members never learned of past Gakkai slanders. This is a clear indication of Nikken Abe's defiance of High Priest Nittatsu Shonin's will.

High Priest Nittatsu Shonin stated, "If the Gakkai has ceased slandering, and if indeed, the Gakkai will change, then the Gakkai has my approval." This is part of the agreement made between the Gakkai and High Priest Nittatsu Shonin. Nevertheless, the Gakkai continued to slander, and taking advantage of the High Priests deep compassion, it deviated even further. So, at Nittatsu Shonin Geika's last meeting with the clergy, shortly before his death, he again reiterated the Gakkai's slanders.

After his death, Nikken Abe assumed Nittatsu Shonin Geika's place as High Priest. With Nikken Abe as High Priest, the Gakkai took advantage of him too by insisting that "(they) were not guilty of slander but merely dealing with obstacles and bearing the brunt of a plot against (them)." Nikken Abe ignored the Gakkai's wrong doing, and moreover began claiming the Gakkai's errors had been entirely corrected. Obviously, this is "slander by association." Nikken Abe does not even have the mercy to correct those who commit slander. He is both jihi ma or merciless, and shitekitai, an enemy and rival to the master.

High Priest Nittatsu Shonin once said, "Gakkai is slandering and we priests were foolishly aware of this." But Nikken conversely stated: "There is no error in the Gakkai"; "Once you understand (the Gakkai), there is nothing wrong with them." and "Some people think the Gakkai has exceeded its limitation as a lay organization, but that kind of thinking is incorrect." It is obvious by this that Nikken Abe is an enemy to High Priest Nittatsu Shonin, or shitekitai.

The fault of slandering by association.

A passage from the gosho, "Admonitions Against Slander" (Japanese Gosho, p. 1056) reads, "No matter how sincerely one believes in the Lotus Sutra, any violation of its teaching will surely cause him to fall into hell, just as one crab leg will ruin a thousand pots of lacquer." "The Embankments of Faith" (Japanese Gosho, p. 1308) reads, "Even though the embankments between rice fields is firm, if there is only one tiny crack in it, the water will never be contained."

If it were the High Priest who, by slandering this Buddhism, put the Daishonin's Law into disorder, he too would be considered an enemy of Nichiren Daishonin. By saying "Once you understand [the Gakkai] there is nothing wrong with them," and "A person who says the Gakkai is slandering is a slanderer," Rev. Nikken slandered by associating with the Gakkai.

His lectures and guidance justified the Gakkai: "Whoever has Gohonzon basically does not have slander"; "There are three kinds of slander-large, medium and small-the Gakkai's slanders are medium and small," He admitted that the Gakkai did not commit a large slander. He also conceded that one may commit medium or small slanders. (Of course, the Gakkai's slander is large.) Nikken Abe's guidance is in opposition to Nichiren Daishonin's teachings. He contradicts himself when he says on one hand, "Whoever has Gohonzon basically does not have slander," and on the other "There are large, medium and small slanders". He compels the people to slander by association in order to give the impression of absolute righteousness with statements such as, "There will be no benefit if someone chants Daimoku against my guidance." He often flaunts his authority, alludes to being the true Buddha and confounds right and wrong. Judging from the above statements he is not a disciple of Nichiren Daishonin, nor a High Priest of Nichiren Shoshu.

To repeat, "No matter how sincerely one believes in the Lotus Sutra, any violation of its teaching will surely cause him to fall into hell, just as one crab leg will ruin a thousand pots of lacquer." And, "Even though the embankments between rice fields is firm, if there is only one tiny crack in it, the water will never be contained."

These Gosho passages indicate that one who has Gohonzon can basically slander, and they prohibit slander whether it is medium or small. Lord Hagirii committed four kinds of slanders. He, in essence, had Gohonzon but Nikko Shonin said he had committed four slanders. If Nikko Shonin believed as Nikken Abe, that one cannot slander if he has Gohonzon, then the True Law would be completely confounded. If we follow Rev. Nikken Abe's guidance we would have to change the teachings of Nichiren Shoshu.

As was mentioned earlier, Rev. Nikken committed slander by association against the Daishonin as a means to protect the Gakkai. We will never approve his office of High Priest, for, as has been shown above, he has three grave faults. Therefore, respecting this person as a High Priest is a mistake and proffers no benefit, moreover, you will be punished for committing "slander by association".

Here it is folks, Gakkai Hate, doctrinalized from Shoshinkai. Gakkai Hate fused with Nikken Hate. What more could you asked for? Of course there is the appeal to the MOST righteouness of the Sacred "Nichiren Shoshu" to die for, complete with the earnest Gosho Quotes and staunch, Gang-Turf Defending.

ANd of course everything in the Sun Devil speal is just as twisted and full of crap, "we are the pure ones!!!" That fanatics in all the groups consider themselves.

Instead of your generalizations, please provide some specifics.

Of course, you think you are the "pure one" in your pratice, true?

I am simply trying to say that all three sides, in this dialogue say the same thing about the other side(s). That is because they are ALL right and ALL wrong at the same time.

A mirror Image is all it is. It is all reactionary behavior, based in illusion.

The real facts speak for themselves. Not in any of these sectarian storylines. Disunity is simply Disunity. People expecting the Gakkai to be perfect is stupid. Naturally a organization always taking in new people is going to be rough. Being unable to see that is cowardly. The Priests have a duty to take care of the temples and provide marrigaes and funerals, AND to be a checks and balance to laypeople. Likewise the Gakkai is to be checks and balances for the Temple, while they do Kosen Rufu. Ikeda made mistakes. He went too far. He began to believe all that reverence aimed towards him. Human Error. The question is, what does he think know. Has he changed? Did he or did he not, fulfil the madate of the Daishonin to establish the True Sanctuary of True Buddhism? Some people fought over this thinking that first the empereor had to take faith. That is what is is all about. Literalists, battling literists, while SOME people actually want to do Kosen Rufu and tell the screaming fools to shut the hell up and reunite and take care of business.

If you can't do that then say goodbye to "Nichiren" Buddhism. It will just be a relic.
